Holdings of the Archives

The archival holdings comprise among others, the following categories of documents; court record books and dockets, native affairs files, minute books, account books, newspaper clippings, annual reports, maps, plans, and Asante stool histories. They include government gazettes, ordinances, acts, legislative instruments, local government bulletins, commercial and industrial bulletins and other government publications. The earliest records date back 1926 when Nana Agyeman Prempeh I was re-installed as Kumasihene, two years after he had returned from exile in the Seychelles.

About Us

The Manhyia Records Office (now Manhyia Archives) was established as part of the Ashanti Research Project. The Ashanti Research Project was conceived by the Institute of African Studies , University of Ghana in 1962. The project was launched in May 1963 at the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi by the Institute of African Studies .
