Asantehene's Treasury

The Asantehene's Treasury Office was responsible for the financial administration of Asantehene's Native Administration. The office was responsible for collection of revenues and payments. They kept accounting records which included accounts books, cash books, ledgers and payment vouchers. With the establishment of Kumasi Municipal Council most of the functions of the Treasury were taken over by the Municipal Council. The Financial Secretary was the head of the Treasury office and he was supported by the State Cashier, Ledger Clerk, Typist and a Messenger.

4.1 Records of the Asantehene's Treasury

The records of the Asantehene's Treasury have been classified into fifteen (15) classes to facilitate their use. Some of the records kept in the Manhyia Archives include correspondence with other stool treasuries in Ashanti , matters relating to courts, tributes, concessions, reports, minutes of meetings, personnel records, rent, leases, and indentures.

About Us

The Manhyia Records Office (now Manhyia Archives) was established as part of the Ashanti Research Project. The Ashanti Research Project was conceived by the Institute of African Studies , University of Ghana in 1962. The project was launched in May 1963 at the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi by the Institute of African Studies .
